Traditional sportswear brands such as Nike, Adidas and Reebok as well as casualwear brands such as Puma and US Polo are fighting it out in the latestfashion segment.
"Since participation in sport is still not very high in India, there is a greater propensity to buy into sports lifestyle products. This is clearly expanding the overall consumer base," said Sanjay Gangopadhyay, marketing director at Nike India.

This month, Nike introduced the "remixed" versions of its iconic performance products. For instance, its dry fit running jacket for athletes was introduced in a light-weight coloured model for the average urban youth. Its main rivals, Reebok and Puma, are already strong in this segment.

Fila, which is setting up direct presence in the country, will position the bulk of its merchandise in the country on the lifestyle angle to enhance its acceptability with the Indian consumer, said Rajiv Bajaj, CEO of Fila India.
Arvind Lifestyle Brands launched apparel brand US Polo—licensed by the US governing body for Polo—in May to align itself with the overall trend that is in sync with casual dressing.

Delhi designer Ritesh Kumar to represent India at the Japan Fashion Week

For Delhi-based designer Ritesh Kumar, futurism has a whole new connotation. “I have often wondered why every time we talk of futuristic design, we can only come up with exaggerated assumptions, like people in spacesuits. The world is increasingly moving towards being more technologically enhanced, so I feel the future of design lies in man-made solutions,” says the 28-year-old alumnus of National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT). Accordingly, Kumar’s spring-summer collection 2010, called Sensawunda (or sense of wonder) involved elements like pipe rings, acrylic and vinyl rings, blended in as collars or button holes or, sometimes, as chic surface embellishments on extremely wearable and trendy ensembles.

It was probably this quality of innovation that wowed Atsuo Nakagawa, the chairman of the Asian Designers’ Collection 2010 committee, when he visited Delhi last month. Nakagawa was in town to select one young Indian designer to showcase at the Japan Fashion Week in March as part of the emerging young Asian designers’ show. The five shortlisted candidates included city designers Varun Sardana, Alpana and Neeraj, Samant Chauhan and Varun Bahl, but it was probably Kumar’s conceptual designs, which swung the decision in his favour. Last year designer Nitin Bal Chauhan had showcased at what was the inaugural emerging Asian designers’ show.

Weddings have always been women's favorite excuse for extravagance and this season's bridal dresses do not disappoint: as Bridal Fashion Week closed on Wednesday in New York, here are the key trends.

One of the most dominant themes was winter in all its romantic connotations: 'snowflakes' made of diamonds and cristals embellished many of the dresses (see Reem Acra or Monique Lhuillier, pictured), models wore white eye makeup, and the term 'winter wonderland' was used by various designers to explain their inspirations.

The most dominant color in bridal dresses seems to be ivory, with few exceptions such as Claire Pettiborne who, inspired by Asian wedding dresses, used a lot of pink shades for her embellishments.

According to leading wedding portal The Knot, accessories were mainly inspired by style icon Jackie O: "Pillbox hats, fascinators, and short gloves are all over the runways," an editor writes. As the Indian wedding season dawns, the trend of going to a slimming clinic or availing of a beauty package to have that perfect glow on the wedding day is peaking. Many are also opting to go under the knife.

“A wedding is the only occasion where one has to focus on the entire look. Be it hair, skin or weight management, you can’t ignore any part of your body. Wedding gives you an excuse to pamper yourself and we help you in doing that.

There is a definite increase in enrolments during the wedding season as brides- and grooms-to-be opt for slimming and beauty packages. More than beauty, brides want to get rid of those extra inches from the tummy,” she added.
And you can’t get slim overnight, they caution.
The best time to opt for these packages is at least three months in advance, suggests Pranshi Garg, clinic manager of The Body care clinic in Preet Vihar.
“One can’t get instant results. To have that perfect glow on your face or to get rid of those inches, one has to join a clinic at least three months in advance.

While a bridal or a slimming package can cost anywhere between Rs.5,000 and Rs.25,000 depending on the requirement, liposuction will cost you around Rs.60,000-70,000 per area of the body.
Though people don’t mind spending money to look good, fitness expert Aamit of FX Zone, Noida, says that slimming centres are not the best way to get rid of those extra kilos and inches.
“In all possibility, the inches or the kilos that you have dropped will pile up soon once you start neglecting your body. These clinics put you on a diet minus exercise and once you go back to your normal diet you will put on weight for sure,” Aamit explained.
“The best way to stay healthy forever is to exercise regularly and eat healthy. It is a very slow process but in the end the results will definitely make you happy as well as proud,”
